“Overview of 2 John”
Read 2 John –
2 John (NASB95)
1The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy andpeace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I was very glad to find someof your children walking in truth, just as we have received commandment to do from the Father. 5 Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into yourhouse, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. 12 Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, so that your joy may be made full. 13The children of your chosen sister greet you.

Audience – Lady and her children
The question is what is meant by the term “lady” There are two thoughts about what is meant by this –
The term lady is referring to the church The term lady is simply referring to a lady
I believe that it is written to the lady and her children Writing style (1 & 2, 5 “we” refers to lady, children, & P)
Love – active verb continuing to demonstrate brotherly love Truth – Reality/Certainly I don’t find clear evidence referencing the church
Theme – “Walking in the Truth”

6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.

What do you think it means to “walk in the truth”?
Walk in the truth – obey God’s Word and allow it to control every area of your life.

Walking in Love
Read 5-6 –
2 John 5–6 (NASB95)
5 Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
Is this a contradiction? (New commandment/old commandment)
The commandment “Love one another” is certainly not new in time, because even Old Testament Jews were instructed to love their neighbors (Lev. 19:18, 34) and the strangers within their gates (Deut. 10:19). But with the coming of God’s Son to earth, this commandment is new in emphasis and in example. Jesus Christ gave new emphasis to brotherly love, and He exemplified it in His own life. It is also new in experience, for we have the Holy Spirit of God living within, enabling us to obey[1]
Love one another –
Love is an active verb – indicating a continually process of doing The point is that we as believers “Walk in Love’ Continue to demonstrate brotherly love
How can you and I demonstrate brotherly love to people?
Respecting teachers Respecting parents Even when they say something you don’t like Abiding by rules Honoring and obeying parents Sharing the gospel
You see walking in truth and walking in love are inseparable.
Warning
Read 7-11
2 John 7–11 (NASB95)
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
Deceivers – trick you to believe something wrong They do not embrace the incarnation of Christ Watch out – be able to see – active verb Vs. anyone not teaching the incarnation of Christ do on receive into your home. If you greet him you are partaking in his wickedness.
Isn’t this a contradiction?
Heb 13:1-2
Hebrews 13:1–2 (NASB95)
1 Let love of the brethren continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
1 Timothy 5:10
1 Timothy 5:10 (NASB95)
10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
As followers of Christ we must be able to watch out for deceivers. I ask you are you confident that you will be able to spot deceivers?
